Starting with a small but inspired and dynamic team with a shared vision for the future, the FKI aims to play a key role in effecting a free knowledge society. The role requires an institute which is sustainable, efficient, and effective in its own right as it inspires and enables growth of free knowledge communities in multiple domains.

The FKI intends to be a platform for people interested in working on this vision together. In order to be effective and cater to the interests of potential participants, we aim to provide tools for self-organising and empowerment. Below follow the core elements of that strategy: how people can get involved, what roles they can take, what founding principles we share and the code of conduct we abide by.

Getting Involved

Here are some ways you can help us grow a free knowledge society:

  • use free knowledge in all its forms and help co-developing it
  • join one of the announce lists (low traffic, but you'll be updated on important news so you are in the loop),
  • join one of the discussion lists (unmoderated),
  • create a profile on the FTA Campus and join groups or start your own,
  • use the FKI wiki for FKI specifics, FTA wiki for the FTA and the general wiki for Free Knowledge and Free Technology in general),
  • or simply by contacting us!

More concretely, you can get involved by reading and contributing to the FKI Strategy, by promoting one of our projects at events - or share or start your own project! You can write articles about one of the main domains we're active in, or show others that you care about a free knowledge society.

Roles

Our basic understanding is that any participation, any contribution is good. As our vision is based on freedom, organisation is bottom-up. People can take different roles according to their capacity and interests. Here's an outline for different roles you can take. See notes on presentation of roles & participation in the discussion page.

  • Subscriber to the announce mailing list (FKI, FTA). Only receives important news updates every now and then.
  • Mailing List Participants in mailing lists. Can participate in online discussions.
  • Wiki User of the main wiki or one of its subwikis. Contribute to the curation of information valuable for oneself and the community
  • Community Member of the FTA Community. Learn, share, produce knowledge and shared projects on Free Technology and Free Knowledge.
  • Working Group Participant. When people want to work on concrete ideas or particular projects, a working group is started. This is generally implemented through an online group in the FTA Community Portal (see list).
  • FTA Learner. Someone who participates in one of the courses organised at the FTA Campus.
  • FTA Tutor. An experienced and knowledgeable person facilitating a tutored FTA course.
  • FTA Learning Assistant. An experienced and knowledgeable person who provides assistance to a peer learning course group.
  • FTA Ambassador/promoter/advocate. Someone who cares about the FTA and contributes in spreading the word about it.
  • FTA Council member. Someone who has been elected by the FTA community or appointed by the FKI Board. The exact governance model of the FTA is under discussion. You're welcome to share your thoughts on the FTA discussion list.
  • FKI Board member. The Board is currently composed of the founders of the FKI.
  • FKI Donor: anyone making a financial contribution to the Institute, be it one-off or continued.
  • FKI True Fan: people making a monthly donation of at least 10 Euro (or of comparable value).

Furthermore there are the peers and partners. A Peer is simply anyone who shares the FKI values and has defined her/his profile in the FTA community. A Partner is any organisation who works together in any project, and - at least - shares the FKI values and founding principles for that project. Here is a preliminary list.

Founding Principles

See Founding Principles to see which principles we share.

Code of Conduct

See our Code of Conduct to get used to the FKI modus operandi.
